Health Information Management Students
Name: Liz Johnson
School: Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri
Degree: Health Information and Informatics Management and Masters of Health Administration
Why did you choose Health Information Technology or Health Information Administration?
I chose this major because of my love for the heath care field and my desire to be on the business and administrative end of the field. I started my freshman year as a pre-med student and decided that life was not for me, but I still wanted to work in the health care field. My interests lie in working on the infrastructure of health care, especially in the United States because our health care system is failing so many of our citizens.
What classes did you find the most interesting and why?
HIM classes so far, and my favorite has been Medical Legal Aspects. I enjoyed learning about the inner working of the laws that guide heath care, and the policies that have shaped American health care today.
When do you anticipate to graduate? Or, when did you graduate?
I will graduate with my bachelors in 2009 and with my masters in 2010.
Are there areas in HIM that are of particular interest to you?
My favorite part about HIM as well as the MHA program is that I will have hundreds of options for jobs when I graduate, and many of them I don't even know about yet. I would ideally like to work for a non-profit or government agency.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see my self working for a company that complements my values, where I can be successful and happy, working directly with and for the benefit of other people.
