Health Information Management Students

Name: Andrea Skahan
School: Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri
Degree: Health Information Management

Why did you choose Health Information Technology or Health Information Administration?

Upon entering college, I was torn between a career in business and healthcare. After talking to people in the field and researching HIM, I found it was the best of both worlds.

What classes did you find the most interesting and why?

Classes I have found most interesting thus far are Healthcare Management and Legal Environment. I enjoyed Management because it offered interesting perspectives on how to effectively communicate and deal with realistic working situations as a healthcare administrator. Legal Environment was an interesting class because we discussed legal concerns in the healthcare setting and thoroughly examined how to deal with certain circumstances.

When do you anticipate to graduate? Or, when did you graduate?

May 2008

Are there areas in HIM that are of particular interest to you?

As of now, I really enjoy Administration and even working with legal cases concerning malpractice. An administrator of a Quality Improvement team also seems appealing because I would have the opportunity to correct problems in healthcare settings.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I hope to have a job either in a hospital or clinic as some type of administrator. I have always thought of working in a large hospital, but there are many advantages to working in a more intimate setting such as a clinic as well. I hope to have my Masters by that point in a specialized area of HIM, and potentially a higher degree if necessary. I would not be opposed, if the opportunity arose, to pursuing a degree in Education so if I want a change of scenery I could pursue a career in teaching Health Information Management.
